Thinking about traveling or studying abroad? Want to host an international student? Want to learn more about the world around you and how you can get involved? Join us for a presentation from a representative of AFS (American Field Service). AFS is a non-profit international exchange organization for students that operates in more than 50 countries. AFS International supports and develops the AFS organizations worldwide. Each year AFS-USA sends more than 1,000 US students abroad, provides approximately $3 million in scholarships and financial aid, and welcomes 2,300 international high school students who come to study in US high schools. They also offer a scholarship specifically for Chicago students (the BP Global Citizens of Tomorrow scholarship), which covers the entire cost of studying abroad for a year in Brazil, China, India, Malaysia, or South Africa. Goals of the Payton enrichment presentation: 1. To introduce the value of studying abroad and get students excited about the possibility of experiencing another culture first hand. 2. To present the possibility of hosting foreign students locally and the idea of sharing one's culture with a student from a different country. 3. To make students aware of the numerous programs and scholarship opportunities available through AFS. 4. To share educational content about culture, intercultural communication, and global awareness in a fun, interactive format.
Here's a message from our AMIGOS representative...
Dear Parents and Students,
Thank you for your interest in joining the Urban Chicago Chapter of Amigos de las Américas! I am sorry we didn't get a chance to meet at the info nights thus far. We have two more opportunities for you to come to our family information sessions where we will answer any and all questions about the goals of our organization, the logistics of our program, and your participation in our chapter!
For planning purposes, please RSVP to Laura Corona at firstname.lastname@example.org with parent and student names and the presentation you plan to attend. If you cannot attend either of these presentations but strongly wish to learn more about our program, please email me with your availability and we can make other arrangements. If you know a friend or family in Chicago who would be interested in learning more about AMIGOS, please invite them to our informational night or have them get in contact with me. At these meetings, we will be scheduling family interviews to be held on Saturday, October 20th and Sunday, October 21st from 10am to 3pm.
Feel free to call or email me with any questions. In the meantime, check out our website and some of my favorite AMIGOS videos to see what our organization has been up to. I look forward to meeting you this week!
