AMIGOS has over 28,000 alumni. It was founded in 1965 and now sends over 500 high school students each year from all over the US to be fully immersed in the cultural and language of a Latin America country while working on a sustainable community-based project. During their time abroad, students live in host families, which strengthens their understanding and appreciation of cultural differences. One of their programs include a four-to eight-week summer program that is open to current 10th-12th grade students that have had two years of Spanish or the equivalent. Extensive leadership training is provided for each student, so they have the tools to design and manage sustainable projects based on local needs in their Latin American community.
I encourage everyone to come out and learn more about this great opportunity! Not only will you strengthen your Spanish by living with local host families but you will gain immense personal growth, confidence in your leadership, and independence. This experience will follow you through your entire life. Hope to see you all there!
